At Home in the Garden: DIY Edition

April 15, 2015

I’ve been spending so much time outdoors lately.  Whether it’s the stunning Spring weather, my new home, or most likely a combination of both…I LOVE IT!

Even though I am all about SPF coverage and protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, at the end of the day your skin needs sun. It provides you with a natural source of Vitamin D, which helps skin, teeth, hair, nails and a healthy immune system. So when thinking of ways to spend more time outside, gardening was a given!

My mom was always a huge gardening fan, and I remember her always going the natural route when it came to killing weeds and and deterring bugs away from the roses.  Determined to be as good as she is, I hit pinterest for some All-Natural Garden Recipes.  Of course I’ve customized them to make them my own.  Hope you enjoy!

All-Natural Bug Deterrent

All it takes are a few simple ingredients from your kitchen and you can make an All-Natural Bug Deterrent. I stress “deterrent” because I don’t want to kill the little guys. Like the sun, even though they can be harmful at times, we need them to make the world go round. They are part of the perfect balance.

I just want them off my flowers (they tear them to shreds)! =)

Start off with a handful of mint…

…and two whole cloves of garlic.

Chop them up up as fine as you can.  I’m about mid chop here.

Put them in a pot of boiling water.

Add about a teaspoon of cayenne pepper…

Give it stir.

Add 10-15 drops of Lavender Oil. Lavender is an excellent deterrent for mosquitos!

Let the mixture reach a rolling boil and remove from the heat.

Add a couple squirts of all-natural dish soap…

…give it a nice stir, and strain over a mixing bowl or measuring cup.

I like using a measuring cup, because of the spouted tip. Makes pouring this into a spray bottle that much easier.

You see just how harsh the bugs are on my flowers.  They’re covered in holes!

After a few good sprays, once a week…

…I’ve noticed a HUGE difference!

All-Natural Weed Killer

My next, SUPER simple, all-natural garden aid is this three ingredient Weed Killer.

Add a 1/4 cup of salt to a spray bottle…

…add a dash of all-natural dish soap…

…fill the rest of the bottle with White Vinegar.

…and in three simple steps you have an All-Natural Weed Killer. Spray directly onto weeds (only) and almost immediately you’ll notice them dying off. Pluck them rom the ground and you’ll have a beautiful garden in NO time!

Hope you enjoyed this post!

I decided to go all natural, too, now that our daughter is running around touching everything!

Hey Rachel! My friends have been searching for this for years. Last year they sprayed garlic water directly on the plants and it literally ate the leafs. Hopefully this will work better 🙂
    Thank you!

btw. I love your new kind of videos 🙂 Keep going!
