DIY Non-Toxic Household Cleaners

September 21, 2014

Hey everybody!

As a new mom I am constantly worrying about what Oliver can get into, and it’s a valid concern considering youngsters put everything in their mouth!

I was doing some research on what household items cause the most problems with children and to no surprise household cleaners top the list. After a bit of pinteresting and googling, I’ve put together my favorite DIY non-toxic cleaner recipes with my personal touches of course.

Hope you enjoy! =)

All Purpose Cleaner:

All you need is water, white vinegar, borax, non-toxic dish soap, and your favorite essential oil for scent.

First add 2 cups of water to a measuring cup.

In the same measuring cup, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

Mix in 1 teaspoon of borax…

… and a few drops of non-toxic dish soap.

Lastly, top off the mixture with 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. I prefer lavender.

Mix, mix, mix.

…and pour the mixture into a spray bottle of your choice. Adjust the measurement depending on the size of the bottle.

There you have it, a non-toxic all purpose cleaner that you don’t have to worry about getting into the wrong little hands.

2 Cups of Water
2 Tablespoons of Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Borax
A Few Drops of Non-Toxic Dish Soap
10 Drops of Essential Oil (your choice of fragrance)

Bathroom Cleaner

Next up is the perfect blend for sterilizing and preventing mold. Ideal for bathrooms.

Start with 1/2 a cup of water in a measuring cup.

Add 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol. This will serve as the sterilizing agent, much needed for bathrooms.

Add 1/2 cup of vinegar…

…and 15 drops of tea tree oil. This is an anti-fungal that will prevent the groth of mold and fungi, common in moist areas.

Lastly, add 15 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Mix it all together, pour into a spray bottle, and clean away! =)

In my family, light is everything! So anytime we are scouting a new location we look for lots of windows; and with lots of windows comes lots of cleaning!  This blend leaves my windows streak free and crystal clear, every time!

Begin with 2 cups of water.

 Add 3 tablespoons of vinegar…

 …and 1/2 a teaspoon of non-toxic dish soap.

Add the mixture to a spray bottle and there you have it, the simplest non-toxic window cleaner out there!

Lemon Dusting Mist

This is a household essential; especially, if you have pets! Just spray onto a dusty surface and wipe away for a clean, polished, dust-free look!

Begin with 1 cup of water in a measuring cup.

Add a 1/4 cup of vinegar.

Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil to polish and protect the surface you are dusting. Great on wood surfaces!

Great idea of making your own cleaners. Did you know Borax is banned in the EU due to harmful
Effects on fertility and the unborn child? I’m sure it would maybe still work if I left those out?
