DIY Potpourri for Summer and Fall

August 30, 2014

Hey everybody!  I know these DIY potpourri’s are super popular on pinterest, but I’ve been a fan of these for years. One of my good friends growing up had a home that always smelled amazing. Her mom taught me about these potpourris back then, and i’ve been using them ever since. They make your home smell SUPER YUMMY! I’m gonna share with you my two favorite recipes. One for Summer and one for Fall/Winter.

It couldn’t be easier!! All you need are fresh Lemons, Rosemary, Whole Cloves, Vanilla Extract and a dash of French Lavender.

first add an inch or two of water to your sauce pan.

Take a couple sprigs of rosemary and add it to the mix.

 add a little clove

and a dash of french lavender for a great floral scent

I also add a small amount of vanilla extract, and let the mixture simmer on low to give the home a beautiful fragrance. Just make sure you don’t forget that it’s on the stove.. =) if you are worried, you can use a crock pot instead. It’s not necessary to keep it on all day. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes a few times a day for a wonderful smelling home.

For a perfect Fall Scent, we’ll be combining classic harvest ingredients that bring the season to life.  All you need are fresh Oranges, Whole Cloves, Vanilla Extract and a couple of Cinnamon Sticks.

Slice or peel an orange, and add it to your sauce pan (pre-filled with about an inch or two of water).

I add two cinnamon sticks to the pan, but you can also use traditional cinnamon.

I also add a good helping of cloves to the mix.

add a small amount of vanilla extract.

Place this simple mixture over a high flame and bring to a boil..

Reduce the heat to Low and add water as needed.

Hope you enjoyed this post! I know your nose sure will 🙂

Until next time.

xo, Rachel

I do like your blog and videos and everything but this I will never get… you waste good food to make your house smell nice, while others starve?
Let alone the energy you waste while cooking this on your stove the whole day… Cant get over it, sorry but this is just not for me!

Rachel, you do have my fullest respect for allowing my comment to be seen although it was negative! I don’t think everybody would do that and I think it makes you very genuine!!!!

As someone who is concern about others well being I constantly donate, help out, etc. it’s a family affair. But that does not mean I don’t want our home to smell and look good. I don’t thing these things should exclude each other 😉

Love this! I do this in my crockpot with lemon, vanilla, rosemary and cloves in the fall and winter before company comes over and always get the nicest compliments. Literally the FIRST thing people say is “OMG IT SMELLS SO NICE IN HERE!” haha
Love the idea of lavender. I’ll need to give that a try next time!

Such a great idea! In wintertime (especially at Christmas time) I like to stick cloves to an orange or clementine and just place few of those around the apartment and it smells SO good 🙂 (I just googled and found out these smelling and decorative oranges with cloves are called pomanders:D)
